IntelliGent: Setting goals

2017 is almost here! Usually the start of a new year is met with excitement when thinking about the possibilities of a new year. But, sometimes the upcoming year can make you feel a little stressed. There seems to be this pressure around making resolutions and sticking to them. Or if you don't make resolutions, your close friends and family may wonder why you haven't... Personally, I'm not a fan of resolutions. I prefer to make a decision then act on it, no starts and fits here! I think anytime is the right time to make a change if that's what you want to do. However, if you are one of the many people that prefer the beginnings of things like the start of a new year, then here are some tips to keep you focused and committed through the year.

1 - Visualize what you want to accomplish and write down a plan or ideas on how to make it happen. The point here is that once you write it down, you can refer to it and use it as a reminder throughout the year to keep you on track. Nowadays, it's really easy to get distracted but by having your goals written down, you have a daily reminder. Also, don't feel restricted by what you initially visualized or planned, life happens and you have the right to change your plans as you see fit. The beauty in all of this is you are constantly evolving so your ideas should constantly evolve too.

2 - Make goals that are realistic but push you beyond your comfort zone. If your goal is to get in shape, try boxing lessons, take some spinning classes, or find a running group in addition to joining a conventional gym or working out at home. You can learn new skills, meet new people or find out you are stronger than you think. Pushing beyond what is comfortable keeps things fun and interesting while you achieve your goals.

3 - Get busy. It won't do any good to visualize and make goals if you don't put any action behind them. Take a class, do some research, or whatever it is you need to do to get active. Dreams don't work unless you do!

4 - Check in with yourself during the year to see where you are relative to your goals. Ask yourself, how am I progressing? Am I off track? What can I do to get back on track? Should I delay some goals for a year or two? Asking yourself questions like these will ensure that you stay on target and help you prioritize what is really important to you. The key here is to focus on your own efforts and not compete with anyone else's goals.

5 - Share your goals with an close friend. If you have goals you know will require a bit more effort than usual, share them with a close friend or family member you trust. They will help you stay on track and keep you accountable because they want the best for you.

These are just a few ways to make certain you start the new year off on the right track and maintain your focus. Whatever your goals or aspirations are for the new year, remember to have fun and enjoy the journey.

Stay stylish friends...
