New Classics: The Denim Jacket

Denim jackets have a classic quality that make them a wardrobe staple for many guys. They are perfect for layering and, as summer winds down, denim jackets are a great transitional piece for daily wear. Available in lighter or heavier weight cotton, an array of washes and many colors, denim jackets have a lived-in appeal that makes them versatile, stylish and functional. Finding a denim jacket (or trucker jacket) that you like shouldn't be hard since most denim brands make a version that should catch your eye. The denim jacket is an American classic and embodies the industrial spirit of the 19th century.

History

As the story goes, the denim jacket debuted in America in the late 1800s and was originally called a blouse. It was introduced by Levi Strauss & Co. in San Francisco, California. The original denim jacket from 1880 has been reissued as part of Levi's vintage clothing collection. There were other denim workwear manufacturers at that time but Levi's outlasted the others due to their superior quality standards and innovation. Denim was popular during this time among ranchers and pioneer workers for it's durability and comfort. The denim jacket was designed as a companion piece to denim workshirts, pants and overalls.

Evolution

The style of the jacket has evolved over time but the basic design (chest flap pockets and v-shaped seams from pocket to waistband) has remained the same. As the jacket has become more mainstream, city dwellers adopted the style. Like many clothing items originally created for utilitarian purposes, the counterculture subverted the original intent and wore the jacket as a sign of rebellion. Nowadays, denim jackets are considered stylish and slightly edgy.

How to wear it

Denim jackets can be worn as outerwear or to layer a look. The unstructured body enables the jacket to easily adapt to most outfits the wearer chooses. With a jean jacket, feel free to pop your collar and roll up your sleeves! And like your favorite jeans, the more your jacket is worn the better it'll look. Stay stylish friends...
